Title
Promotion and Networking of EU Projects on Sustainable Tourism

Comments/Description
Tourism is one of the largest economic sectors in Europe and has become a global business with an unmanageable number of target groups, stakeholders and key actors, representing different interests, perspectives, demands and needs. In this setting, tourism is linked to many risks and it takes a lot of know-how, experience and competence to perform successfully in the different markets. It is not enough to just seeing the economic potential of tourism as having unlimited growth but much more, its destructive dimension and the limited resources must also be considered.
These problems have been evident for a very long time and therefore the concept of “sustainable tourism” was developed, which generally speaking tries to interfere as little as possible with environment and local culture whilst improving local development and employment at the same time.

Nowadays, sustainable tourism plays a key role in each major development policy. The importance of sustainable tourism is also reflected in many EU projects in LLP or other funding programmes that have the concept as main topic in their activities.

So far there have been no attempts to link them with each other, developing formal/informal networks between the partnerships, allowing them to learn from each other and providing them with special opportunities and platforms for promoting their projects to target groups, stakeholders and the general public.

PESTO seeks to improve this situation.

Comments/Description
Tourism and catering is one of the most important economic branches in Europe and provides more than 7 million jobs in Europe, however especially this sector is relying very much on flexibility and mobility of work forces.

This is the main reason for the development of the ECVET model as a basis for mutual recognition and transparency of competences and learning outcomes. In a network consortium, which reflects the tourism and catering sector characteristics (where large parts of the training programmes are implemented as corporate training in hotels, tourist centres, spas, cruise ships, etc.) which includes tourism schools, VET providers, colleges, university colleges, hotels, cruise ship companies, labour force providers and associations the main activities planned are the implementation of a baseline survey of competences and learning outcomes needed in the tourism and catering sector.
On this basis a competence grid for all relevant competences will be developed which forms the cornerstone of the ECVET model elaborated.
The model will be presented in a detailed handbook for implementation together with supporting documents like a Memorandum for Mutual Trust and a draft for an ECVET certificate.
All activities are embedded in a comprehensive quality management strategy and surrounded by a sustainable strategy for dissemination and exploitation. The network as such follows an enlargement strategy throughout the whole funding period and will be developing a detailed and feasible sustainability strategy for the time after the funding period.
The main impact aims refer to the training providers and schools in the tourism and catering sector, companies and work force providers which receive a model for mutual recognition and accreditation for vocational training and learning outcomes.

Comments/Description
Innovation, as an ingredient for successful ecotourism development is a precondition for success. ECOTOUR aims to integrate elements of innovation strategy as a means for enhancing the development of ecotourism and allowing the generation of new jobs. In addition, the project aims to develop a complete guide on ecotourism standards in Cyprus which ultimately can be utilized by other destinations. The title of the programme itself indicates the importance that is given to innovation and knowledge transfer.
