Description

The transition between secondary school and vocational school doesn’t function very well, partly because of lack of resources for an adequate and sufficient guidance. Many students in secondary school claim that they will proceed in high school even though vocational education would suit them best if any had gone into the subject. However, as vocational training is not attractive in itself, this will not be the first choice of the students, and for most counsellors that guide students in their choice of education it is just the easiest to accept an expression of interest toward high school instead of opening up for an examination of what the student really wants. How do we make counsellors change their way of counselling when the resources are few and even reduced during the last years?

    GetSet –Be Ready to Go is project of transfer of innovation under Leonardo da Vinci –programme. The goals of the project are to develop a guiding model and a workbook for adult learners. The aim of the project is to develop a social skills training programme for adult learners. It is targeted for adult learners whose everyday skills must be practiced. The Project is based on Friskie-Leonardo da Vinci –project. The themes of the project will base on the Friskie-themes 1. Work, studying and family life, 2. Responsible Adulthood and 3. Active Citizenship. The product of the project will be used by teachers of adult learners, social authorities and employment administrations. The themes of the GetSet-workbook will be: 1. Training and Work and 2. Positive Steps in Everyday Life. The workbook tasks will be developed and tested together with the possible users.
    The workbook will be used by the adult learners themselves as well. The partners of the project are Turku University of Applied Sciences, Royal Borough Of Kingston upon Thames, Learning and Children’s Services, United Kingdom, Kuressaare Ametikool, Estonia and Handwerkskammer Münster (HWK), Germany.

    In Europe, the number of people who drop out of vocational training has been at a constantly high and unacceptable level for many years. This is true for countries with a dual vocational training set-up as well as for those with a more traditional educational system. A dropout carries serious risks for an individual’s career as well as economic risks for the training company. In small and medium-sized companies in particular, dropout not only causes economic damage but also reduces their willingness to train apprentices in the future.
    PraeLAB had four focal points. First was the promotion of systematic cooperation and networking amongst all who are involved in vocational training: trainers, teachers, counsellors and case managers. The second aim was the provision of valid and approved tools for identification of apprentices with high dropout risk. The instrument developed in Switzerland on the diagnosis of and on the feedback of dropout risk was modified.In addition to this innovative methods of holistic counselling of adolescents with high dropout risk with particular attention paid to young people with a migration background as well as on gender aspects was implimented. And at last a training concept for the qualification of staff in the field of vocational training and counselling was developed and accredited.

    The SCAN project was responding to the need of complex counselling and guidance services in Slovakia and Luxembourg, which supports people in identifying and developing their own job-related goals, their next steps, managing their personal and professional reorientation by choosing the right educational program and in general activating them to manage their work life.
